FED-Micron (ФЭД-Микрон), half-frame scale-focus camera
with Helios-89 lens, 1.9/30
#8012751, 35 mm, Olympic type
"FED" plant, USSR
with strap
Very good condition. Camera seems to be working (although exposure meter works a bit not very precisely, at incandescent lamp is sets shutter speed 1/250). Body has very small signs of age (leatherette has partly came unstuck at the edges). Lens is clear and clean, without any fungus or scratches. Inside the lens and viewfinder there are microspecks of microdust. Strap is original.
History of the camera
"FED-Micron" was made since 1968 till 1985 by plant "FED", Kharkiv, USSR. It's a scale-focus half-frame film camera working in Program AE mode. Totally about 110 000 pieces were made. Engineers were inspired by Japanese "Konica Eye".
Camera offered was made in 1973.
"Micron" uses standard 35-mm film, but it's half-frame, so the frame size is 24x18mm (what is twice smaller than standard 24x36mm).
Before taking picture the ISO of the film must be set rotating the disc at the rear side in the range 16-250.
Camera has built-in selenium lightmeter (its round window is around the lens and is closed by wavy plastic. It measures the light and set automatically the exposure parameters. They are grouped in pairs: at the maximum light shutter will fire with f/16 and 1/800, at the minimum possible light - with f/1.9 and 1/30. That pairs cannot be changed.
The chosen exposure parameters can be controlled in the viewfinder: from the right side there are shutter speeds written (marked as 30-60-125-250-500-800) and an arrow moves when pushing the release button despite of shutter cocked or not. Arrow goes from 800 till the shutter speed set by the camera. If the shutter is cocked, it will fire. It's adviced to measure the light and control the chosen shutter speed before cocking the shutter.
If there is not enough light, the scale will become red and pushing the release button will be not possible.
Aperture can be set manually, rotating the aperture ring at the lens. The only possible shutter speed then is 1/30. When using flash, only possible shutter speed will also be 1/30.
Bulb mode also presents with the only possible aperture f/1.9
Camera is scale-focus, in other words focusing is performed by rotating the disc with distance scale in range 1 meter - Infinity. Rotating the disc moves an arrow in the viewfinder that points an symbols: "Portrait"-"Single figure"-"Group Portrait"-Infinity.
Viewfinder has main frame and inner frame for compensating parallax when taking picture closer than 1.5 meters.
Shutter is central and performs the aperture function.
Lens is stationary "Helios-89", 1.9/30. Lens is high speed, with high resolving power - 50/29 lines/mm (centre/edge).
Camera has a cable synchrocontact for flash, but not shoe.
Rear cover can be fully removable or opening in hinges. The camera offered has fully removable rear part.
"Micron" has a self-throwing off frame counter and 1/4" tripod socket.
In USSR this camera was not popular because of its scale-focus and half-frame type combining with high price - 85 Soviet Roubles (with average salary about 120 Soviet Roubles per month). For example, rangefinder "FED-5" cost 77 Roubles and SLR "Zenit E" - 100 Roubles, and these cameras had changeable optics and full-frame.
Since 1978 till 1986 "FED" plant produced second version of this camera - "FED-Micron-2",
