History of the camera
"FED-Micron-2" was made in 1978-86 by plant "FED", Kharkiv, USSR. It's a rangefinder film camera working in Program AE mode. Totally about 35 000 pieces were made. Engineers were inspired by Japanese "Konica C35".
Camera offered was made in 1981.
It is the second camera of "Micron" family. Although "Micron" and "Micron-2" look similar, they are rather different. "Micron" is half frame (with frame size 24x18mm, and "Micron-2" is full frame (with standard 24x36mm frame size).
"Micron" is scale-focus, in other words focusing is performed by rotating the disc with distance scale in range 1 meter - Infinity. Rotating the disc moves an arrow in the viewfinder that points an symbols: "Portrait"-"Single figure"-"Group Portrait"-Infinity. "Micron-2" is a typical rangefinder.
"Micron" has built-in selenium lightmeter and does not need any batteries, and "Micron-2" got CdS photoresistor. So, it needs a battery for working.
Before taking picture the ISO of the film must be set rotating the disc below the lens in the range 16-350.
Camera has built-in CdS lightmeter (its round window is above the lens). It measures the light and set automatically the exposure parameters. They are grouped in pairs: at the maximum light shutter will fire with f/14 and 1/650, at the minimum possible light - with f/2.8 and 1/30. That pairs cannot be changed.
The chosen exposure parameters can be controlled in the viewfinder: from the right side there are shutter speeds written (marked as 30-60-125-250-500-650) and an arrow moves when pushing the release button despite of shutter cocked or not. Arrow goes from 650 till the shutter speed set by the camera. If the shutter is cocked, it will fire. It's adviced to measure the light and control the chosen shutter speed before cocking the shutter.
If there is not enough light, the arrow will point at red zone and pushing the release button will be not possible. If there is no working battery, arrow also will point at red zone.
Aperture can be set manually, rotating the aperture ring at the lens, f/16 is available only in manual mode. The only possible shutter speed then is 1/30. When using flash, only possible shutter speed will also be 1/30.
Bulb mode also presents with the only possible aperture f/1.9
Camera is rangefinder, in other words focusing is performed by rotating the focusing disc at the lens. The aim is to unite the image in the center of viewfinder with the outer image in the viewfinder. Rangefinder base is 24 mm.
Viewfinder has main frame and inner frame for compensating parallax when taking picture closer than 1.5 meters. Viewfinder is rather bright.
Shutter is central and performs the aperture function.
Lens is stationary "Industar-81", 2.8/38.
Camera has hot shoe.
Rear cover is opening in hinges.
"Micron" has a self-throwing off frame counter and 1/4" tripod socket. On the bottom there is a battery compartment.
In USSR this camera was not popular because of its high price - 125 Soviet Roubles (with average salary about 120 Soviet Roubles per month). For example, SLR "Zenit E" cost 100 Roubles.
Later on the base of "FED-Micron-2" new models "FED-35", "FED-35A" and "FED-50" were produced.
