According to the Gospel of Luke (Lk. 2:1–7), Jesus Christ was born during the reign of Emperor Augustus in the Jewish city of Bethlehem in the family of carpenter Joseph the Betrothed from Nazareth and Mary. Joseph and Mary arrived in Bethlehem to take part in the census (Lk. 2:1–2), which was conducted by order of Emperor Augustus when Quirinius ruled Syria. The family was forced to spend the night in a cave, which was used as a barn to shelter cattle from bad weather, because there was no room in the inn. At the time of the birth of Jesus Christ, the Star of Bethlehem rose, which indicated this event to the wise men from the East.
